        <title>Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami</title>
        <link>http://campbells.net/document.php?id=445</link>
        <description>
        The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, known by the scientific community as the
Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, was an undersea earthquake that occurred at
00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) on December 26, 2004. The tsunami
generated by the earthquake killed approximately 275,000 people, making it
one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. The disaster is also
known as the Boxing Day Tsunami.

Various values were given for the magnitude of the earthquake, a Rare
great earthquake, ranging from 9.0 to 9.3 (which would make it the second
largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph), though authoritative
estimates now put the magnitude at 9.15.

        <title>Hurricane Rita</title>
        <link>http://campbells.net/document.php?id=442</link>
        <description>
        Early on the morning of Saturday, September 24, Hurricane Rita came ashore
near Sabine Pass, TX. Rita had been a Category 5 monster a few days
earlier, but had weakened to a Category 3 by the time it made landfall.
Rita caused further levee breaks in New Orleans (originally caused by
Hurricane Katrina) and severe flooding in southwestern Louisiana.

Mom &amp; Dad returned to Beaumont on Saturday night to find that their
house was intact, but without power.

        <title>Hurricane Katrina</title>
        <link>http://campbells.net/document.php?id=441</link>
        <description>
        Katrina was the most devastating hurricane to hit the United States in
recorded history. It made landfall just east of New Orleans, near Biloxi,
Mississippi, pushing a 28-foot storm surge up to 30 miles inland. The rains
caused levee breaks in and around New Orleans, which rapidly flooded the
entire city. Mismanagement by state and local authorities coupled with a
slow response by FEMA led to widespread civil unrest and looting. More than
a million people were displaced by the storm and resultant flooding; the
Houston Astrodome, Reliant Arena, and numerous other large facilities were
converted into shelters in Texas, Arkansas, and around the nation. New
Orleans had barely stabilized a few weeks later when Hurricane Rita (qv.)
caused renewed flooding.
